What Healthcare Training Taught Me About Writing

Writing
Writing

Teaching nurses and physicians taught me something surprising: the lessons I learned in the classroom are the same lessons I use when writing fiction.

Here are 3 things healthcare training taught me that shaped my writing:

◾ Attention spans are short. In training, you lose learners after a few minutes. In fiction, you lose readers after a few paragraphs.

◾ Clarity beats complexity. Jargon confuses both learners and readers. The simpler, the better.

◾ Stories stick. Nurses remember workflows when tied to a real-life scenario. Readers remember a twist when it resonates emotionally.

The worlds of education and authorship aren’t separate—they overlap in more ways than I ever imagined.
